Selecting a foundation for your skin can be harder if you have zero idea of what your skin type and what your undertone is. As more and more brands releasing their own foundation ranges makes this task difficult for us to decide which foundation suits us better.
The first task is to identify what your skin type is. There are mainly three types of skin on our faces. Oily skin, Dry skin and Combination skin.
Oily skin - Is the type of skin that you are prone to breakouts and acne and your face is oily throughout the day.
Dry Skin - This is the skin type where you hardly get oily and have more dry patches on your face. You can easily guess when you touch your face with a tissue or your hands and if you don't feel any oils on your hands or on the tissue then you most probably have dry skin.
Combination Skin - This is the most common skin type. If you have oily t zone and normal skin on your rest of the face then you are in this category. If you do the tissue test only the t zone area of the tissue will show oily.
So now that you have identified your skin type the next step is to find out your undertone.
There are mainly three types of undertones - Yellow, Cool and neutral
Yellow Undertones - This is the undertone which is in most Asian countries and those with skin colors towards yellow or golden. It is easy to identify if you've veins that shows a green color or if you look better with Gold jewelry.
Cool Undertones - Most of the time more lighter skin tones have this undertone. If you have blue veins or if you can pull off Silver jewelry better then you are in this category.
Neutral Undertone - If you don't fall in to both the above categories then you've got neutral undertone.
So now you have a better idea of what your skin type and your undertone. Let's go and select your perfect foundation now :)
When selecting a foundation it is important to do your own research about it first. It is better if you can do some live swatches at the store before committing to buy the full product.
Tips when selecting a foundation
- Always do a patch test on your cheekbones closer to your nose area and compare it with your neck. If your foundation doesn't match with your rest of the body then it won't look natural.
- Always test the foundation on natural light. When you look at a certain foundation inside a store under lots of lights you won't be able to judge the perfect color to match your skin.
-Wait for sometime to see whether it oxidizes or change color. Some foundations gets darker with time and some oxidizes in to more orange or darker color. Keep this in mind when doing a patch test.
-If you are able to go to a store and get a foundation look for samples. I think stores like Sephora and some other stores provide free samples. So it will be easy for you to wear it and see how it is before spending your hard earned for the full product.
- If you are choosing a foundation online always look for swatches and YouTube videos with people of same color skin so you can get a better idea. And read reviews about the product too.
- Be careful with the texture and finish each foundation provides. Some foundation have matte finish some does dewy finish. Do your research well before deciding which you are going to choose.
- Mac foundations have their foundation range numbered as W (warm), C (cool), N (neutral) undertones.
Tips or Oily skin
It is best to use a mattifying foundation that is suitable for oily skin or a powder foundation which most probably would not clog your pores. If you have oily skin the liquid foundation is better than a cream foundation as the liquid has more water in it and would not clog your pores and would blend well in to the skin. A cream foundation will sit on yours pores if you don't remove it well and will result in acne later. It is best to set it with a translucent powder to prevent oils peaking through during the day. A BB cream is good option too since it just gives a light coverage.
It would be better to use a clay mask before applying your foundation for special occasions so that the amount off oils will be soaked up from that mask leaving your face matte without much need for a touch up.

Tips for Dry skin
It is best to use a moisturizing foundation if you have dry skin or it will settle down in any lines on your face and make them look worse. A cream foundation would be more suitable and be careful not to set it with translucent powder other than the areas you have applied concealer or lightly on your tzone to avoid looking cakey.
